    D. take

To get this exercise correctly, we need to understand what the paragraph is trying to convey. How has Singapore managed to transform itself from a 19th century colonial outpost into a modern Asian nation grounded in hard work and intelligence? It must do two things:

    1. Establish priorities for the country and make a list of important things that it must accomplish successfully every year. In other words, it must set national priorities

    2. Make sure that it will finish what it has set out to do year after year. In other words, it must follow through on them year upon year.

    follow through
(with something) | follow something through
to finish something that you have started
In the context of the paragraph, the phrasal verb "get through" doesn't quite convey a sense of dedication and purpose of seeing something through till the bitter end as "follow through" does.

Tips for doing word completion exercises:

To do these word completion exercises, you should first read over the passage to get a general understanding of the whole passage.

Classify the word list according to their parts of speech category:

    Preposition: for
    Adjective: absent, other
    Noun: facts, leaders
    Verb: occupy, inform
    Adverb: however
    Past participle: called, defined

Pay attention to the expressions before or after the missing blank to find a clue to the missing word.

For examples, in the first completion, the existence of the phrase "Family life continues to" before the blank should imply that the missing word must be a verb in an infinitive form. There are only two verbs "inform" and "occupy" in the word list. It is easy from the context of the sentence that only the verb "occupy" is appropriate for the missing blank.

For the second completion, the phrase after the blank "or understood" should imply that the missing blank must be a past participle of a verb to comply with the parallel structure rule in syntax. From the list, we have two past participle "defined" and "called", and only "defined" would match the context of the sentence.

For the third completion, the phrase "are rarely" preceding the blank and the phrase "from speeches at ..." would suggest that the missing blank be an adjective. There are only two adjectives in the list (absent, other), and it is easy to reason that the missing blank must be filled with "absent" to match the context of the sentence.

With this deductive method, you should be able to complete the rest of the exercises easily. After each completion, mark the used word in blue with the order in parentheses to indicate that it has been used.

Peter lives quite near his aunt's house.
    A. Peter doesn't live a distance from his aunt's house => incorrect. This expression "doesn't live a distance from" is kind of unnatural, not something a native speaker would use => Zero Google use example.
    B. Peter doesn't live away from his aunt's house => incorrect =>This implies that Peter still lives with his aunt.
    C. Peter doesn't live a long way from his aunt's house => Peter doesn't live far from his aunt's house => Peter lives quite near his aunt's house
    D. Peter used to live near his aunt's house => incorrect => This describes an action in the past, not relevant to the current situation.

    NOTES

The key to doing these completion exercises is to understand the context where each missing word is used. It may be difficult for beginning students to discern the nuances of differences in some of the given word choices, and the way to overcome these difficulties is to expand your reading and to pay particular attention to definitions and usage examples given in the dictionaries whenever you look up a new word. The Internet is also an excellent source to verify the accuracy and usage of any new word in actual use.

    1. "Guidelines" is the correct word choice in this context instead of "guides". According to the OALD, guidelines [plural] means: a set of rules or instructions that are given by an official organization telling you how to do something, especially something difficult

The government has drawn up guidelines on the treatment of the mentally ill.

On the other hand, "guide" refers to something that helps you decide. It doesn't refer to any specific set of rules or instructions as in the context of this reading exercise.

    2. "means" is the correct word in this context as it helps to explain the preceding sentence "why is a balanced diet essential?"

    3. "low" is the correct word in this context. "Low" indicates the desired volume level of sugar and salt in the blood.

    4. "reducing" is the correct word as there is no practical way we can eliminate, drop or cut fats out of our diet.

    5. "amount" is the correct word as it refers to "quantity of foods consumed".

    6. "form" => "in the form of" is a very popular expression, meaning "the particular way in which something appears or exists" (McMillian dictionary).
"This comes in the form of" => 2,330,000 Google results

    7. "with" => packed with => full with (vitamins). "With" is the correct preposition here.

    8. "taking" the lift => take the elevator, take the lift => "take" is often associated with "lift/elevator"

9."to maintain" is a more appropriate word choice than "to keep" in this context. "To maintain" a healthy body implies conscious efforts to keep the body in a good condition or at the same standard and level by doing regular exercises.

    10. "simple" is the correct word choice in this context. The message is simple => the message is clear, not complicated, easy to understand.
