Many Americans celebrated(2) Halloween on Monday by placing(3) pumpkins outside their homes. A Halloween tradition(4) is to cut a face(5) into the big, round squash (6).
Pumpkins are also an(7) important part of the thanksgiving(8) holiday in late November. Tradition says early settlers (9) ate pumpkin pie, or something similar(10) to it, with the native.(11) Americans during the first celebration.
Pumpkins are members of the .gourd(12) family. They are related to melons(13), cucumbers(14) and squashes.(15). They are, like all of their relatives(16), fruit, not vegetables(17). Pumpkins have firm flesh(18), seeds(19) in the center and a shell(20) that is usually orange. And they contain more vitamin A(21) than almost any other fruit.
Pumpkins have been grown(22) for thousands of years in North and Central America. They have been grown for so long, in fact, it is unclear(23) what whiled(24) relative the plant has. Pumpkins grow on wines(25) or bushes. Most pumpkins weight(26) a few kilograms, but some have reached(27) well over four hundred fifty kilograms.
Pumpkin flowers are usually fertilize (28) by bees. The insects(29) carry reproductive material(30) called pollen from the male to the female flowers. No fruit will grow if the female flower is not pollinated(31) at the right time.
Closely related(32) squashes and gourds can also fertilize pumpkins. This crossed(33)-pollination will show itself not in the creen(34) years pumpkins, but in seeds(35) grown the following year.
Pumpkin is used in pies(36), breads.(37), cakes(38) and other baked(39) goods. Baked pumpkin seeds are also a popular food(40). Pumpkin filling(41) for pies is produced industrially.(42).
Pumpkins are very low in ashes(43), unlike many fruits.(44). This makes can(45) pumpkin a place where the bacteria (46) that causes botulism food poisoning(47) can grow. For this reason(48), experts say it is not a good idea to can crush.(49) pumpkin at home. Whole (50) pumpkins, however, store(51) well in cool, dark places52) for weeks.
Less than one percent.(53) of the American pumpkin supply is important.(54) or exploded(55). Most pumpkins are used in the states where they are(56) grown. Prices(57) can be very different from place to place.
American farmers grew(58) over four hundred fifty million kilograms of pumpkins last year. The crop(59) was valued(60) at about one hundred million dollars.
