    Unit 3 Ways of socialising

To attract someone’s attention so tha we might speak to that person, we can use either verbal or non-verbal forms of communication . Let us discuss non-verbal commuication in English first. Probably the most common way of aattracting someone’s attention is by waving . For example , If we are at a noisy party and see a friend. , Lym , in the door about 20 meres away , we might raise our hand and wave to her as a signal that we see her .

But how hard can we wave in a situation loke this ? Suppose you are at the airport, and you see your brither get off the plane and befin walking toward you . Of you re excited you might jump up and down and wave as hard as you can to attract his attention. This is the instance where bif , obivious no-verbal signal are appepriate.

But there are some social situations where small non-verbal attention getters are moe appropriate. In a restaurant , for example , if we want to attract the attemtions of our waiter, we have several choices . We can wait until he passes near us , catch his eye and nod slightly to let him know that we nees assistance. We do not whistle or clap our hands to get the person;s attention . That os considered impolire and even rude.

In most social situations where some informality is allowed, a brief raise of the hand and a small wave os fone. For insrance, if you are walking across the schoolyard and see your teacher appoaching you , a small friendly wave to attract his or her attrntion appropriate.

Once you’ve got your friend’s attention, you shouldn’t point at the person or thing you want her to look at , A slight nod will do . Point at someone is usually cosudered rude. Of couse , there are times when pointng is perfevtly caceptable such as when a teacher wants to ger someone’s attentions in class/ The teacher often points to the student and says “ David , would you read the next sentence , please ? “ . Pointing here is not impolite: it’s simply a way to get someone’s attention.

    Unit 1 : Home Life

I come from a family of five people : my parents , my two younger brothers and I . My mother works as a nurse in a big hospital. She has to work a long hours and once a week she has to work on a night shift . My father is a biologist . He works from 8 am to 5 pm in a lab , but sometimes when there is a project he doesn’t come home until very late at night . Althought my parents are very busy at work, they try to spend as muck time for their childrens as possible . It is generally believed the “ men make house and women make home “ but in my family , both parents jiin hands to give us a nice hoyuse and a happy hime.

My mother is a very caring woman . She takes the responsibility for running the household . She is always the first one to get up in the morning to make sure that we leave home for school with breakfast and in suitable clothers . In the afternoon , after hospital , she rushes to the market , the hurries home so that dinner is readdy on the table by the time Dad gets homr. Dad is always willing to give a hand with cleaning the house . Unlike most men , he enjoys cooking. Sometimes , at weekends . he cooks us some special dishes. His eel soup is better than any other suops I have ever eatẹn.

As I am now in my final year at the secondary school, and in my attempt to win a place at university , I am under a lot of study pressure. However. Being the eldest child and the only daughter in the family I try ti help with household chores. My main reponsibility is to wash the dishes and take out the garbege. I also look after the boys , who are quite active and mischievous sometimes, but most of the time they are quite obedient and hard-working . They love joining my father in mending things around the house ar weekend.

We are a very close-knit family and very supportive of one another. We often share our feelings , and whenever problems come up. We discuss them frank and find solutions quickly. We always feek safe and secure in our family. It is a base frim which we can go into the world with confidence .

    Unit 2 Cultural diversity

Traditionally, Americans and Asias have very different ideas about love and marriage. Americans believe in “ romantic “ – marrige -- a boy and girl are attracted to each other, fall in love , and decide to marry each other. Asians , on the other hand , believe in “ contractual “ marrige – the parents og the bride and groom decide on the marriage : and love – if it ever developes – is supposed to follow marriage, no precede it.

To help prove these ideas , a survey was conducted among American , Chinese and Indian students to determine their attitudes toward love and marriage . Followwing is a summary of each other group’s reponses to the four key values.

Physicak attractiveness : The Americans wewe much more concerned than the Indian and Chiese with pjysicak attractiveness when choosing a wife or hisband . They also agreed that a wife should maintain her beaty and appearance after marriage.

Confiding : Few Asian students agreed with American students; view that wives and husbands should share all thouths . In fact , a majorority of Indians and Chiese actually thought it was better and wiser for a couple not to diccuss certain matters or share certain thought . A particularly large number of Indian men agreed that it was inwise to confide in their wives .

Parnership of equals : The majority of Asian students reject the American view that marriage is a partnership of equals , demanding no more or no less from each other. A majority of the Indian students agreed that “ a woman has to sacrifice more in a marriage than a man “ .

Trust built on love : Significantly , more Asian students than American students agreed that “ a husband is obliged to tell his wife where he has been f he comes home lare “ . The Asian wife can demand a record of her hudband ;s activeties. The American wife , for example , trusts her husband to : do the right thing “ because “ he loves her “ not because “ he has to ‘ .

By any measurement of the four values of romanticsm : physical attractiveness before and after marriage , confiding , equal partnership and trust buil on love , yuong Asian are far from being as romantic as their Amaerican counterparts , even today.
