Present and past paticiple:
Ví dụ : we are all surprised by the news ( chúng tôi đều bị ngạc nhiên bởi tin tức đó )
Trong ví dụ trên, "surprised" bổ nghĩa cho "we" , thái độ ngạc nhiên sinh ra là do tác động của yếu tố "the news". Không phải tự nhiên "chúng tôi ngạc nhiên" mà "chúng tôi ngạc nhiên v́ tin tức đó ".
- PHân từ "ed" c̣n được sử dụng như một h́nh thức bị động rút gọn khi muốn nhấn mạnh người hay vật bị tác động bởi yếu tố đó.
Ví dụ : The news is surprising (tin mới này thật đáng ngạc nhiên )
Trong câu này, "surprising" dùng để miêu tả tính chất của "the news", bản thân "the news" mang tính chất đó chứ không chịu tác động của yếu tố nào.
+ Lưu ư : " V_ing" cũng có thể dùng cho cả người và vật
Ví dụ : He is an interesting ( anh ấy là 1 người đàn ông thú vị )
Ví dụ : The girl chatting on the Internet is my younger sister ( cô gái đang nói chuyện trên mạng là em gái tôi)
Ví dụ : The journey is very tiring (chuyến đi rất mệt mỏi)
"tiring" bổ nghĩa cho "the journey" và liên kết với chủ ngữ bằng động từ "is" .
+ It is a very tiring journey .( đó là một chuyến đi rất mệt mỏi )
