I. The form of the possessive/genitive case
Các hình thức của sở hữu cách
A 's is used with singular nouns and plural nouns not ending in s:
a man's job the people's choice
men's work the crew's quarters
a woman's intuition the horse's mouth
the butcher's (shop) the bull's horns
a child's voice women's clothes
the children's room Russia's exports

A man ‘s job: công việc của một người đàn ông

B A simple apostrophe (') is used with plural nouns ending in s: a girls' school the students' hostel

C Classical names ending in s usually add only the apostrophe:
Pythagoras'Theorem Archimedes'Law Sophocles'plays
Những cái tên kinh điển tận cùng là “s” thì thường cũng chỉ thêm dấu phẩy

D Other names ending in s can take 's or the apostrophe alone:
Mr Jones's (or Mr Jones' house) Yeats's (or Yeats') poems
Những cái tên khác có tận cùng là s thì có thể thêm (‘s) hoặc thêm mỗi dấu phẩy cũng được.

E With compounds, the last word takes the 's:
my brother-in-law's guitar Names consisting of several words are treated similarly.

's can also be used after initials:

Note that when the possessive case is used, the article before the person or thing 'possessed' disappears:
the intervention of America = America's intervention
the plays of Shakespeare = Shakespeare's plays
Chú ý rằng khi các cách sở hữu được sử dụng, thì không còn các mạo từ a, an đứng trước người hoặc vật được sở hữu

II. Use of the possessive/genitive case and of + noun
Cách sử dụng của các cách sở hữu và of+danh từ

A The possessive case is chiefly used of people, countries or animals as shown above. It can also be used:
Các cách sở hữu thì được sử dụng chủ yếu cho người, đất nước hay động vật như đã trình bày ở trên. Nó cũng có thể được sử dụng để nói về sở hữu của:
1 Of ships and boats: the ship's bell, the yacht's mast
của tàu thuyền

2 Of planes, trains, cars and other vehicles, though here the of construction is safer:
a glider's wings or the wings of a glider
the tram's heating system or the heating system of the train
Của máy bay, tàu hỏa, ôtô và các phương tiện giao thông khác mặc dù ở đây việc sử dụng “of+danh từ” chính xác hơn.

3 In time expressions'
a week's holiday today's paper tomorrow's weather
in two years' time ten minutes' break two hours' delay a ten-minute break, a two-hour delay are also possible: We have ten minutes' break/a ten-minute break
trong các cụm thành ngữ chỉ thời gian

4 In expressions of money + worth:£l's worth of stamps ten dollars' worth of ice-creamTrong các thành ngữ chỉ giá trị của tiền bạc+worth (trị giá bao nhiêu tiền)

5 With for + noun + sake: for heaven's sake, for goodness' sake
Theo cụm : for heaven’s sake, for goodness’sake (ơn Chúa!)

6 In a few expressions such as'
a stone's throw journey's end the water's edge
Trong một vài cụm thành ngữ khác nữa chẳng hạn

7 We can say either a winter's day or a winter day and a summer's day or a summer day, but we cannot make spring or autumn possessive, except when they are personified: Autumn's return.
Chúng ta có thể nói hoặc a winter’s day hoặc a winter day nhưng chúng ra không thể làm cho mùa mang tính sở hữu trừ khi nó được nhân cách hóa: Autumn ‘s return (sự trở về của mùa thu)

8 Sometimes certain nouns can be used in the possessive case without the second noun, a/the baker's/butcher's/chemist's/flonst's etc can mean 'a/the baker's/butcher's etc. shop'.Đôi khi một số danh từ nhất định có thể được sử dụng ở dạng sở hữu cách mà không cần danh từ đứng sau.(đã ám chỉ luôn rồi) VD at the chemist’ (ở hiệu thuốc)

Similarly, a/the house agent's/travel agent's etc. (office) and the dentist 's/doctor 's/vet 's (surgery):
You can buy it at the chemist's He's going to the dentist's Names of the owners of some businesses can be used similarly:
Sotheby's, Clandge's
Tên của người chủ hoặc tên kinh doanh cũng tương tự.
Names of people can sometimes be used similarly to mean ' .'s house':
We had lunch at Bill's. We met at Ann's.
Cũng như vậy tên của một người cùng với dấu sở hưữ cách có thể ẩn đi nơi chốn

B of + noun is used for possession.

1 When the possessor noun is followed by a phrase or clause.
The boys ran about, obeying the directions of a man with a whistle.

2 With inanimate 'possessors', except those listed in A above:
the walls of the town the roof of the church the keys of the car However, it is often possible to replace noun X + of + noun Y by noun Y + noun X in that order:
the town walls the church roof the car keys
Với những vật vô tri vô giác thì ta ngoại trừ những cái đã đề cập đến ở mục A

III. Compound nouns

2 Noun + gerund: Danh từ + Danh động từ

3 Gerund + noun:
waiting list diving-board driving licence
landing card dining-room swimming pool

B Some ways in which these combinations can be used:

1 When the second noun belongs to or is part of the first:

But words denoting quantity: lump, part, piece, slice etc. cannot be used in this way:
a piece of cake a slice of bread

2 The first noun can indicate the place of the second:

3 The first noun can indicate the time of the second:
summer holiday Sunday paper November fogs
spring flowers dawn chorus
Danh từ đầu dùng để chỉ thời gian của từ thứ hai

4 The first noun can state the material of which the second is made'
steel door rope ladder gold medal
stone wall silk shirtwool and wood are not used here as they have adjective forms: woollen and wooden, gold has an adjective form golden, but this is used only figuratively:
a golden handshake a golden opportunity golden hair The first noun can also state the power/fuel used to operate the second:
gas fire petrol engine oil stove

5 The first word can indicate the purpose of the second:
coffee cup escape hatch chess board
reading lamp skatmg rink tin opener
golf club notice board football groundTừ đầu tiên có thể chỉ mục đích của từ thứ hai)

6 Work areas, such as factory, farm, mine etc , can be preceded by the name of the article produced:
fish-farm gold-mine oil-rig or the type of work done:
inspection pit assembly plant decompression chamberNơi làm việc chẳng hạn farm, factory có thể theo sau tên của những vật mà nó tạo ra gold –mine (mỏ vàng)

7 These combinations are often used of occupations, sports, hobbies and the people who practise them:
sheep farming sheep farmer pop singer wind surfing water skier disc jockey
and for competitions'
football match tennis tournament beauty contest car rallyViệc ghép này cũng được sử dụng với nghề nghiệp, các môn thể thao, sở thích và người luyện tập chúng, (trong các cuộc thi nữa)

8 These categories all overlap to some extent They are not meant to be mutually exclusive, but aim to give the student some general idea of the uses of these combinations and help with the stress.

C As will be seen from the stress-marks above:
1 The first word is stressed in noun + gerund and gerund + noun combinations, when there is an idea of purpose as in B5 above, and in combinations of type B7.

Khi ghép danh từ và danh động từ hoặc danh động từ và danh từ , trọng âm rơi vào âm tiết đầu tiên. Cũng như thế với các từ chỉ mục đích (xem B5 và loại B7)

2 In place-name combinations both words usually have equal stress: King's Road Waterloo Bridge Leicester Square But there is one important exception. In combinations where the last word is Street, the word Street is unstressed'

3 I think painting/a painting is a fascinating hobby. ~ Well, you're certainly very good at it.

Excercise 2: Complete the conversations. Put in these nouns: business (x2), experience (x2), glass, iron, light, paper, space, time. Put a/an or some before each noun.

Eg: Harriet: Did you manage to park in town?
Mike: It took me ages to find a space. And all I wanted was to buy some paper to wrap this present in.

1 Sarah: Are you busy tomorrow?
Mark: I'm meeting someone in the office. We've got………………………… to discuss.
2 Trevor: Do you think I need to take………………………. with me for my shirts?
Laura: Oh, surely the hotel will have one.

Không tin được nữa, Zip có phải là mình không nhỉ. Cô Mai Phương ơi E tỉnh cả ngủ nè. Đang ngon giấc thì sếp gọi dậy làm việc. Chạy ngay đến lớp xem cô chữa bài chưa thì thấy tên Zip nè.

Cũng có này: so much noise (Uncountable): nhiều tiếng ồn
Ở trong bài là Did you hear (noise/a noise) in the middle of the night? Thì sẽ phải là bạn có nghe thấy một tiếng ồn giữa đêm khuya không? chứ nhỉ?
Như vậy với các từ vừa Countable vừa Uncountable thì ta phải xét xem ngữ nghĩa của câu thế nào nhé..
2. a cake of soap : cái này đúng mà..nhưng cô ko dùng a cake of soap bao giờ :D nên lúc tra từ điển Longman xong, cô đã bảo nghe nó Vietnamese quá
còn gì..Cô có bảo NO đâu..Chính ra Cake dùng với nhiều từ hơn ví dụ nhé:a cake of tobacco một bánh thuốc lá, fish cake (bánh cá)..Nhưng riêng với soap thì cô chỉ gặp a bar of soap là thông dụng thôi..Thế! Nhé em.
