Tet Holiday

As you know , today , The Gregorian New Year, however , is New year ‘s day in many countries in the west .It has not been generally accepted in Vietnam, in the countryside in particular. That ‘s because it is not Vietnamese traditional New Year ‘s day . And now , You and I will go into this topic to have a broader look at the traditional New year ‘s day of VietNam which we call it Tet Nguyen Dan , more commonly known by its shortened name Tết .

Tet holiday is the celebration of the beginning of spring as well as a new year which is the most important and popular holiday and festival in Vietnam. It is the time for family reunions, exchanging gifs, best wishes and the beginning of a new year.. And I think that Tet has become so familiar, so great to the Vietnamese, to all of you , that when Spring arrives, the Vietnamese, wherever they may be, are all excited with the advent of Tet, appreciate its meaning and they wish to come back to their homeland for a family reunion and a taste of the particular flavours of the Vietnamese festivities.

1.TIME :
It ‘s clear that Tet starts on the first day of the first lunar month and is the first season of the new year (according to the lunar calendar) Literally, Tet Nguyen Dan means the first morning of the first day of the new period. Officially, it marks the beginning of a new year on the lunar calendar . Everybody now still believe that the first day and the first week of the new year will determine the fortunes or misfortunes for the rest of the year. There fore, tet is an occasion which is highly appreciated and be prepared carefully . ( that was the time ) When we refer to tet holiday , it is neccesary to refer to the time…

2. Before The Tet : As I have mentioned , Tet is the start of something new so People often try to pay off their debts in advance so that they can be debt-free on Tết. Parents buy new clothes for their children so that the children can wear them when Tết arrives. Because a lot of commercial activity will cease during the celebrations, people try to stock up on supplies as much as possible. In the days leading up to Tết, the streets and markets are full of people. Everyone is busy buying food, clothes, and decorations for their house. If someone lives far away from home, they will try to come home to celebrate Tết with their family.Vietnamese people have the custom that they usually return to their families during Tết. Some return to worship at the family altar or visit the graves of their ancestors. Others return to where they grew up. That is the reason why we have “ Bữa cơm tất niên “

3.Feast of the Household Gods _ Lễ Táo Quân ( ngày mai nè mọi người ) this holiday falls on the twenty-third of the twelfth month of the lunar year. The holiday marks the day on which the chief guardian spirit of the kitchen returns to heaven to report on the activities of the family. A new spirit is then assigned to the household for the coming year to replace the previous one. On the day of Le Tao Quan, each family pays tribute to the kitchen God. This includes buring sacrificial gold paper and offering a fish )carp_ for him to ride on his journey to heaven.
It is also easy to see things in days leading to Tet like A bamboo pole (New Year's Tree) A literary art form of Chinese origin (parallel sentences). A cau doi, "sentence pair", consists of two sentences or lines. Each line corresponds with the other meaning as well as tone pattern and individual word meaning. The cau doi is usually used to convey good wishes on the Tet holiday. It is highly specialized form of poetry. . Hạt Dưa: roasted watermelon seeds, also eaten during Tết. Mứt, including mứt dừa, which is sweetened coconut: These dried candied fruits are rarely eaten at any time besides Tết , 5 fruit tray ( mâm ngũ quả ) The peach and the apricot blossoms are symbols of the Vietnamese Tet. The warm pink of the peach could very well match the dry cold of the North, but the hot South seems to be flourishing in the riot of the yellow of the apricot. Nomatter thay are poor or rich , they also try to decorate their house with some of these trees

4. Giao Thừa (New Year's Eve)

is The transition hour between the old year and the new year
Each home is thoroughly swept and decorated with flowers and offerings for ancestors by the night before Tết. At midnight, many places often have fireworks.
5. Tất niên :

The first day of Tết is reserved for the nuclear family. In big cities, the streets are usually empty as most people stay at home or leave the city to visit their close relatives in the countryside. Children receive ĺ x́ (red envelopes containing money) from their elders. Usually, children don their new clothes and give their elders the traditional Tết greetings before receiving the money.

5.Greetings
The traditional greetings are "Chúc mừng năm mới" and "Cung chúc tân xuân" (Happy New Year). People also wish each other prosperity and luck. Common wishes for Tết include:

• Sống lâu trăm tuổi (Live up to 100 years): used by children for elders. Traditionally, everyone is one year older on Tết, so children would wish their grandparents health and longetivity in exchange for mừng tuổi or ĺ x́.
• An khang thịnh vượng (Security, good health, and prosperity)
• Vạn sự như ư (May a myriad things go according to your will)
• Sức khoẻ dồi dào (Plenty of health)
• Cung hỉ phát tài, (Congratulations and be prosperous)
• Tiền vô như nước (May money flow in like water): used informally
• Since the Vietnamese believe that the first visitor a family receives in the year determines their fortune for the entire year, people never enter any house on the first day without being invited first. The act of being the first person to enter a house on Tết is called xông đất or đạp đất .

And these are also what I want to say with you , hope you have more useful knowledge about this occasion from my topic . Thanks you for your reading. Hope that this topic is joined by not only 11 members but also overseas students from Vietnam !

Happy NEw Year

Tet Holiday

What is Tết ?

“Tết” is a word of Chinese origin and a phonetic transcription of “Tiết”,a Sino-Vietnamese term which means “the joint of a bamboo stem”and,in a wider sense, the beginning of a meteororological period of the year.

The passage from one period to the next may cause climatic disturbances (heat, rain, mist) that must be exorcised by ritual sacrifices and festivities. Thus, there are many Tếts throughout the year (Mid-Autumn,Cold Food Tet,etc). The most important of all is “Tết Cả” (Big Tết or simply Tết),which marks the Lunar New Year.

Tết occurs somewhere in the last ten days of January or the first twenty days of February, nearly halfway between winter solstice and spring equinox. Although the Lunar New Year is observed throughout East Asia, each country celebrates Tet in its own way in conformity with its own national psyche and cultural conditions.

For the Vietnamese people,Tet is like a combination of Christmas,Western New Year’s Day,Easter,American Thanksgiving,and everyone’s birthday.It is a festival of communion,purity ,renewal,and universal peace.

Why is Tet a festival of communion?

For a peasant people attached to the earth since the distant past, Tet has been and remains first of all a festival of communion with nature. In the rhythm of season,it marks an interlude for farmers and rice fields to rest after twelve months of labour,Tết is not to be missed. For example, the eighteenth century king Quang Trung, the leader of the biggest peasant revolution in Vietnamsese history, celebrated Tết some days in advance so he could launch a decisive attack upon the invading Quing army stationed in Thang Long (present-day Ha Noi)

Tet is a festival of communion for the members of the same family and village. In former times, villagers hardly went outside their bamboo fences, those who could not return to their families for the first three days of the year felt deeply homesick, more than at any other time of the year.

All members of the family-grandparents, father, mother, brothers, sisters, uncles, and aunts-gather together to “eat Tết” (ăn Tết) under the same roof.Friends and relatives visit one another and exchange greetings and good wishes.

Tet is also a festival of communion of all citizens of VN at home or abroad. The Revolution of August 1945 put an end to eighty years of French domination,Tết of 1946 was dubbed “Tết of Independence".During his time as president, Hồ Chí Minh wrote his Tết greetings each year in a poem, which he himself read for broadcast at midnight on the eve of Tết.These poems reflected the current problems and prospects of the nation.

Tết is also a festival of communion of the living with the dead. The ephemeral world of the living celebrates under the benevolent gaze of the ancestors, who are invited back from the Other World during the course of a ceremony to mark the transiton from the old year to the new.

Relatives and friends coming to deliver season’s greetings also pay homage to the spirits of the deads.Vietnamese attend the tombs of their kin with pious care before the old year expires:they clear all weeds and replace the plantings on the tomb.

Those who died for national independence are not forgotten;in each village their last resting place is a site of collective pilgrimage.

Why is Tet an occasion for purification and renewal?

Spring,Summer,Autumn,Winter and Spring again.Nature always renews its youth, returning to its primary purity and freshness.People ,who are part of nature, follow the same course.

Tết,the first day of Spring, carries with it the connotations of rebirth that Easter has in the West.During this period of universal renewal and rejuvenation, Vietnamese feel the spring sap welling up within them;this has an effect similar to the purifying Fountain of Youth. This partaking of cosmic life has given rise to special customs.

Every deed during the three days of Tết should be well-intentioned and finely realised ,for it symbolises and forecasts actions during the coming twelve months. One abstains from getting across and from using bad language. The most shrewish mother-in-law smokes the pipe of peace with their daughter-in-law.Quarreling husbands and wives bury their hatchets.Children promise to be good;grown-ups hand the children gifts, which are often copper coins wrapped in scarlet paper since red is the colour of luck. The children are happy to get new clothes.Beggars are given alms.

The "new" world must be the best of all worlds. Once the holy resting time is over, activities resume with the "new" frame of mind after the "inaugurating ceremonies": the "inaugurations of the seals" for civil servants , the "inaugurations the pen-brush" for scholars and students, and "inauguration of the shop" for traders.

For the Vietnamese,Tết brings a message of confidence in humanity;it brings redemption, hope, and optimism.

Grammar :

Vì thế thay vì nói the dog's bone, người ta nói the bone of the dog, hay the woman's husband, thì nói là the husband of the woman.

Đôi khi người ta nói The book is for my son, thay vì nói it's my son's book.

Còn nếu chúng ta nói tới a girl's homework, thì nhớ đặt dấu ' ở đằng trước chữ -s.
